[00:00:02] This is a Bramble Jam Podcast

[00:00:12] It's the Christmas Morning Podcast

[00:00:14] Everyone join if you can

[00:00:18] Christmas greatest fans

[00:00:21] Scott and Bram

[00:00:23] Here for you and me

[00:00:26] Hello, hello, hello and Happy Thanksgiving!

[00:00:29] Welcome to a special Thanksgiving edition of Christmas Morning.

[00:00:33] I am Bramble Jam and I am here with Scott.

[00:00:35] Scott, Happy Thanksgiving, buddy.

[00:00:36] Happy Thanksgiving, Brandon.

[00:00:38] I got stuff on the stove in the kitchen

[00:00:40] so we gotta move it right along today.

[00:00:42] Well, let's open up that mailbag.

[00:00:43] Alright.

[00:00:44] Letters! We get letters!

[00:00:46] We get stacks and stacks of letters!

[00:00:50] I've got two emails today.

[00:00:52] One's from David Scarborough.

[00:00:53] David says,

[00:00:54] Just dropping in to tell you that a local radio station here

[00:00:56] has switched over to Christmas 24-7.

[00:00:59] In case you're wondering where local is,

[00:01:01] I live in a suburb of Dallas.

[00:01:03] Eggnog has arrived in the grocery stores

[00:01:05] and snack cakes and treats

[00:01:07] are all on display front and center.

[00:01:09] We wait impatiently all year to get here

[00:01:11] and yet this part always moves so fast.

[00:01:13] I always say,

[00:01:14] I'm gonna slow down and enjoy it this year.

[00:01:16] Although I enjoy the season,

[00:01:18] I never slow down.

[00:01:19] If you figure out how to do it,

[00:01:21] let me know.

[00:01:22] I know you're both involved with other podcasts.

[00:01:24] How about giving them a shout-out

[00:01:25] so we can check out more

[00:01:26] from our favorite fellow Christmas pilgrims?

[00:01:30] No!

[00:01:31] No, we don't want to.

[00:01:32] No, you've had enough TV, Scotty, in your life.

[00:01:34] You don't need more of this.

[00:01:35] No, there's lots of great.

[00:01:36] What's your favorite Christmas podcast

[00:01:38] that we're not a part of, Scotty?

[00:01:39] The one that we're not a part of,

[00:01:41] there is one called Hark.

[00:01:44] And there are two versions of the Hark podcast.

[00:01:47] One is very filthy.

[00:01:49] Oh.

[00:01:49] That's not what I'm thinking of.

[00:01:51] It's pretty good,

[00:01:51] but it's not really my thing.

[00:01:52] They swear a lot on there.

[00:01:54] Wow.

[00:01:54] The other is called Hark.

[00:01:56] I think it's called The Stories Behind Our Favorite Carols.

[00:01:59] It is very much a churchy type podcast

[00:02:03] because it's about carols specifically.

[00:02:05] And it's put out by like American something or other,

[00:02:08] which is like church related.

[00:02:10] But it has some of the best sound design

[00:02:13] and production that I have ever heard.

[00:02:15] They only put out four episodes a year

[00:02:17] and it's during the weeks of Advent.

[00:02:19] So I really enjoy that one.

[00:02:21] Yeah.

[00:02:22] And I will just say, Scotty,

[00:02:23] it is primarily, it is about Christmas carols,

[00:02:26] but it's not like hitting you over the head

[00:02:29] with like church stuff.

[00:02:31] So if that is-

[00:02:32] No, no, no, no.

[00:02:33] But you can tell it's their MO.

[00:02:34] Yes.

[00:02:34] But I will say to like,

[00:02:36] it is kind of like the one time,

[00:02:37] like Christmas,

[00:02:38] there's something about Christmas carols,

[00:02:39] whether regardless of what you believe,

[00:02:41] Christmas carols are still Christmas songs

[00:02:43] and we love them.

[00:02:44] So it's a really great podcast

[00:02:45] just to learn more about those songs in particular.

[00:02:48] It is so, so well done.

[00:02:50] I wish Tinsel Tunes sounded more like that,

[00:02:51] but Dwayne and I are back and forth.

[00:02:54] So we're two hosts.

[00:02:55] So it kind of,

[00:02:55] the format doesn't really work.

[00:02:57] The reason why I love those episodes though

[00:03:00] is because the history is so rich with these songs.

[00:03:02] And those are also my favorite episodes of Christmas.

[00:03:04] I'm sorry,

[00:03:05] of Tinsel Tunes is the ones

[00:03:06] where the history of the song is really rich.

[00:03:09] Much like you talked about Jingle Bells yesterday.

[00:03:12] That episode is so good

[00:03:13] because the history is so deep and wide.

[00:03:15] And so it's a really, really fun podcast.

[00:03:17] I mean, I love the Christmas cousins.

[00:03:19] I love, I, I, we've both been on it multiple times,

[00:03:23] but I love the Christmas cousins.

[00:03:24] There's so many good Christmas podcasts out there.

[00:03:25] Of course.

[00:03:26] Yeah.

[00:03:26] I can't leave out anybody.

[00:03:27] Obviously deck the hallmark.

[00:03:29] You should all be checking that out.

[00:03:30] That's the OG.

[00:03:31] That's where this show came from.

[00:03:34] I also love total Christmas podcast with Jack Ford.

[00:03:37] That guy is hilarious.

[00:03:39] Christmas pass, which I would like

[00:03:41] is definitely an OG Christmas pod.

[00:03:43] There's so many good ones out there.

[00:03:44] Yep.

[00:03:45] Merry Britzmas.

[00:03:45] I mean, and I don't, the thing is now I've said a bunch

[00:03:48] and I haven't said the 10 others that I like.

[00:03:50] So I'm just going to stop here

[00:03:52] before I dig myself into a deeper hole.

[00:03:54] There's a lot of good stuff.

[00:03:55] What's the website though?

[00:03:56] It's like christmaspodcast.com or something.

[00:03:58] Christmaspodcastnetwork.com.

[00:03:59] Yeah.

[00:04:00] And they like have a whole list

[00:04:01] of all of the Christmas podcasts that are out there.

[00:04:03] So that's a great resource to utilize.

[00:04:05] Yeah.

[00:04:06] If you are interested in finding more Christmas podcasts.

[00:04:09] Yeah.

[00:04:09] He talked about the radio station switching.

[00:04:11] Obviously that was probably an email from a week or two ago,

[00:04:13] but I will just say this.

[00:04:16] I threw this story away because it was originally

[00:04:18] when we were going to do an episode on November 1st

[00:04:20] and then we scrapped it because of time.

[00:04:21] There was a news story about a radio station,

[00:04:25] a real radio station in California

[00:04:28] and the San Fernando Valley area

[00:04:31] that switched to Christmas music on October 26.

[00:04:35] And I believe that was the earliest

[00:04:37] that I saw a radio station switch.

[00:04:39] And so shout out to Kate Mozart

[00:04:42] for switching over to Christmas before Halloween.

[00:04:46] Oh, cool.

[00:04:47] That's pretty fun.

[00:04:49] So that reminded me,

[00:04:51] that triggered that memory of a station.

[00:04:52] That's crazy.

[00:04:53] But I don't think I've seen an actual station

[00:04:55] switch before Halloween before.

[00:04:58] So that was cool to see in the web.

[00:04:59] That's cool.

[00:05:00] One more email that is podcast related from Michelle B.

[00:05:03] Michelle says,

[00:05:04] Hi, Brandon Scott.

[00:05:04] I love your show.

[00:05:05] And thank you for brightening my mornings

[00:05:07] with your kindness, enthusiasm, and joy.

[00:05:09] Another podcast I love is the Celtic Christmas Music Podcast

[00:05:13] hosted by Mark Gunn.

[00:05:15] He posts episodes throughout November and December

[00:05:17] and the first episode for 2024 just dropped.

[00:05:22] The show promotes Celtic culture through Christmas cheer

[00:05:25] and I think it's wonderful.

[00:05:27] Well, Michelle, I'm going to check that out.

[00:05:28] Thank you for letting me know.

[00:05:29] That was wonderful.

[00:05:30] You got a joke for us?

[00:05:31] I do.

[00:05:31] How does Santa Claus take photos?

[00:05:33] Ooh, an Alfie?

[00:05:34] No, with a North Polaroid.

[00:05:37] Waka, waka.

[00:05:40] I like it.

[00:05:41] That was nice.

[00:05:42] That was nice.

[00:05:43] Let's see the countdown.

[00:05:50] 27 days until Christmas!

[00:05:54] Ooh.

[00:05:55] 27 days.

[00:05:57] Wow.

[00:05:57] Yeah.

[00:05:58] Nine times three.

[00:05:59] There you go.

[00:06:00] Say no more.

[00:06:01] And of course, zero days until Thanksgiving

[00:06:04] because it is Thanksgiving.

[00:06:05] It is Thanksgiving.

[00:06:07] You know what?

[00:06:08] This show is already going slow

[00:06:09] and people are like,

[00:06:10] Hey, we got to get moving here.

[00:06:12] What's going on, folks?

[00:06:13] 27 days.

[00:06:14] We're just excited.

[00:06:15] We're just excited, everybody.

[00:06:16] Okay?

[00:06:17] That's right.

[00:06:18] And welcome everybody who are the holdouts.

[00:06:20] Yes, that's right.

[00:06:21] That's right.

[00:06:23] Let's get to the news if you want to.

[00:06:26] Let's do it.

[00:06:32] Saturday is November 28th.

[00:06:35] Here's the news.

[00:06:38] Scotty, we've talked a little bit about

[00:06:40] how late Thanksgiving is this year.

[00:06:42] I hate it.

[00:06:43] I hate it so much.

[00:06:44] I think part of that is to blame on the fact

[00:06:45] that last year,

[00:06:47] Thanksgiving fell on November 23rd.

[00:06:49] That's how it should be.

[00:06:51] Which is early.

[00:06:52] It was early.

[00:06:53] You get an extra week of the holidays that way.

[00:06:55] That's right.

[00:06:55] So you may be wondering,

[00:06:57] and I began to wonder this,

[00:06:58] and so I thought I would give a little bit

[00:07:00] of a history lesson.

[00:07:02] I know.

[00:07:02] Brain giving a history lesson is hilarious.

[00:07:05] Kind of feels more like the purview of Daniel,

[00:07:07] but I'll let you fill in.

[00:07:08] Sure.

[00:07:09] Yes.

[00:07:09] Well, I was wondering about Thanksgiving

[00:07:11] and how it kind of ultimately landed

[00:07:13] on the final Thursday of the month

[00:07:16] and how all of that's...

[00:07:17] I thought it was because it's always the,

[00:07:20] like a certain,

[00:07:20] what are the,

[00:07:21] is it the last Thursday of the month?

[00:07:23] Yeah, the fourth Thursday of the month.

[00:07:25] The fourth.

[00:07:25] Okay, that's how it works.

[00:07:26] So the U.S. recognized Thanksgiving

[00:07:28] since 1789.

[00:07:30] They had their first little gathering

[00:07:34] November 26th.

[00:07:34] It was known as the Day of Public Thanksgiving.

[00:07:37] Given.

[00:07:38] No G at the end there.

[00:07:40] Given.

[00:07:40] They were fly back then.

[00:07:43] Thanksgiving.

[00:07:43] Given.

[00:07:44] For the next seven decades,

[00:07:45] the president would issue Thanksgiving proclamations,

[00:07:48] though the dates would vary,

[00:07:50] and sometimes it didn't even happen in November.

[00:07:53] The Library of Congress reports

[00:07:54] that President James Madison

[00:07:56] proclaimed Thanksgiving on two different dates,

[00:07:58] September 9th in 1813,

[00:08:01] and March 16th in 1815.

[00:08:05] In 1863,

[00:08:07] President Abe Lincoln

[00:08:08] put his foot down

[00:08:11] and proclaimed that Thanksgiving

[00:08:12] would be held on the last...

[00:08:13] He's a big foot.

[00:08:13] He's a tall fellow.

[00:08:15] Yes.

[00:08:15] The last Thursday of November

[00:08:18] is what he said.

[00:08:18] There was an exception.

[00:08:20] Apparently,

[00:08:21] President Andrew Johnson

[00:08:22] is rumored to have forgotten

[00:08:23] to issue a Thanksgiving proclamation

[00:08:25] in 1865

[00:08:28] and had to quickly put it

[00:08:29] on the first Thursday of December that year.

[00:08:33] So you just forgot.

[00:08:34] You just forgot about it overall.

[00:08:36] What am I forgetting?

[00:08:37] Oh, no.

[00:08:38] Yes.

[00:08:39] So for another roughly seven decades,

[00:08:42] Thanksgiving was celebrated

[00:08:43] on November's final Thursday,

[00:08:44] but in 1939,

[00:08:46] Thanksgiving was set to be held

[00:08:48] on Thursday, November 30th,

[00:08:50] which is the last day of the month.

[00:08:51] President Franklin D. Roosevelt

[00:08:53] felt like it was going to shorten

[00:08:55] the Christmas shopping season

[00:08:57] and would cause the nation's

[00:08:59] economic recovery to struggle.

[00:09:02] And so he moved Thanksgiving

[00:09:03] to the second to last Thursday

[00:09:06] is how that ultimately happened.

[00:09:08] And that has been how it is ever since.

[00:09:12] And so...

[00:09:12] So it's the second to last Thursday?

[00:09:14] Yes, apparently.

[00:09:16] But is today the second to last Thursday of...

[00:09:19] No, it can't be.

[00:09:20] It's not.

[00:09:21] It can't be.

[00:09:22] All right.

[00:09:22] Well, this...

[00:09:22] Here it is.

[00:09:23] While 32 states...

[00:09:24] Oh, I see.

[00:09:24] There's more to the story.

[00:09:25] I apologize, everybody.

[00:09:26] While 32 states agreed...

[00:09:28] Below the fold, as we say.

[00:09:29] While 32 states agreed

[00:09:30] and rescheduled the holiday

[00:09:32] in their state,

[00:09:32] 16 others refused

[00:09:34] and left Thanksgiving

[00:09:35] on the last Thursday in November.

[00:09:37] It remained that way until 1941.

[00:09:40] So there was a split

[00:09:42] until 1941

[00:09:44] when Congress finally agreed

[00:09:45] to put Thanksgiving

[00:09:46] on the fourth Thursday of November.

[00:09:49] And that is where it remains today.

[00:09:51] Wouldn't it be cool

[00:09:52] if it was the second?

[00:09:53] We get so much more Christmas season.

[00:09:54] So much.

[00:09:55] So much more.

[00:09:56] But what can you do?

[00:09:57] How funny is it, though,

[00:09:59] that 32 states agreed

[00:10:01] to reschedule it

[00:10:02] and move it earlier,

[00:10:04] 16 states refused,

[00:10:05] and then they went

[00:10:07] with the 16 states that refused.

[00:10:08] That is weird,

[00:10:09] but it would be kind of cool.

[00:10:10] Like, hey, Brian,

[00:10:11] you want to hop over the border

[00:10:12] and celebrate Thanksgiving again?

[00:10:13] Yeah, let's do it.

[00:10:14] I know.

[00:10:15] I love that they just,

[00:10:16] for a few years,

[00:10:18] the country was split

[00:10:19] on when to give thanks.

[00:10:22] Seems apropos.

[00:10:23] But can you imagine

[00:10:24] a holiday being,

[00:10:25] like, depending on where you live?

[00:10:27] Oh, what a mess.

[00:10:28] I know there's so much turkey.

[00:10:29] So much turkey.

[00:10:30] I found that to be quite interesting.

[00:10:32] That's great.

[00:10:32] That was a really interesting one.

[00:10:33] There you go.

[00:10:35] Let's take a quick break.

[00:10:36] We'll come back.

[00:10:36] We'll get to the TV listings

[00:10:38] and our food fights.

[00:10:40] Food fight.

[00:10:41] Hey, Ron, Christmas morning.

[00:10:46] Welcome back, everybody.

[00:10:47] It is Thanksgiving.

[00:10:49] It is, for many people,

[00:10:51] officially the start

[00:10:52] of the holiday season.

[00:10:54] So if this is your first episode

[00:10:55] joining us,

[00:10:56] welcome.

[00:10:57] Welcome.

[00:10:58] Let's get to the TV specials.

[00:11:00] It's beginning to be

[00:11:01] very, very full.

[00:11:02] So, Scotty,

[00:11:03] TV Scotty,

[00:11:04] take it away.

[00:12:45] courtesy of MostlyChristmas.com.

[00:12:47] Thank you, TV Scotty.

[00:12:49] That was a mouthful,

[00:12:49] just like I have right now

[00:12:51] because I'm getting on,

[00:12:52] I'm putting a little bit of the turkey.

[00:12:53] I'm trying out the turkey, okay?

[00:12:55] It's a sample.

[00:12:56] It's a sample.

[00:12:57] You're like the father in the Christmas,

[00:12:59] in a Christmas story.

[00:13:00] That's exactly right.

[00:13:01] Stay out of that turkey.

[00:13:02] It's got an hour to cook.

[00:13:03] You'll get worms.

[00:13:04] Yeah.

[00:13:05] Sometimes you just gotta,

[00:13:05] you just gotta try it out.

[00:13:07] Today we have a special Christmas music battle.

[00:13:09] It is Thanksgiving.

[00:13:10] Thanksgiving is all about food.

[00:13:11] So for the second year in a row,

[00:13:13] we are doing a,

[00:13:14] what we're now calling a food fight.

[00:13:17] Which came to Bran yesterday,

[00:13:18] which is one of the best ideas

[00:13:20] he's ever had in his life.

[00:13:22] Second only to asking me

[00:13:24] to do this show with him.

[00:13:25] They, well, wow.

[00:13:27] Thank you.

[00:13:28] These are songs about food

[00:13:30] in some way, shape or form.

[00:13:31] They don't necessarily have to be about turkey.

[00:13:33] It doesn't have to, you know,

[00:13:34] I think what, what,

[00:13:35] what did you bring last year?

[00:13:41] 52s.

[00:13:42] Fruit cake.

[00:13:43] Fred something.

[00:13:45] It just has to be about food.

[00:13:47] Although today it does seem like

[00:13:48] there's a bit of a turkey theme.

[00:13:49] So that's nice.

[00:13:51] Up first is Christmas Turkey Blues

[00:13:53] by Arrogant Worms.

[00:13:56] Oh gosh.

[00:13:58] Hey kids,

[00:14:02] it's cause Santa Claus is flying

[00:14:04] right on over your place.

[00:14:07] You've been a bad kid all year,

[00:14:11] so quit your sniveling sucker now.

[00:14:14] And mop up them tears.

[00:14:16] You don't deserve a damn thing.

[00:14:21] You're not even cute

[00:14:22] and your attitude stinks.

[00:14:25] It must suck to be you.

[00:14:30] Nobody likes you,

[00:14:32] so what can you do?

[00:14:34] You think you got problems, kid.

[00:14:36] You think you got strife.

[00:14:38] But come each December,

[00:14:40] do you fear for your life?

[00:14:43] Oh well,

[00:14:44] I'm your turkey baby,

[00:14:45] so your troubles are small.

[00:14:47] Now I'm stuffed on your table

[00:14:50] and a tasty butterfly home.

[00:14:52] Cause I've got

[00:14:54] the Christmas Turkey Blues.

[00:14:57] Well, that was the Christmas Turkey Blues.

[00:14:59] All right.

[00:14:59] How about that?

[00:15:01] Hang there!

[00:15:02] A little,

[00:15:03] kind of B-52-y a little bit in the vocals.

[00:15:05] It was a little bit like that, yeah.

[00:15:06] It's like if the B-52s took a nap

[00:15:08] and woke up and was like,

[00:15:09] I gotta perform?

[00:15:10] That was like a,

[00:15:11] that.

[00:15:11] It was like a sleepy B-52.

[00:15:13] Up next,

[00:15:14] we got the Let's Turkey Trot

[00:15:15] by the Dolly Rots.

[00:16:17] Brian,

[00:16:17] this is not the first time

[00:16:18] the Dolly Rots

[00:16:19] have appeared

[00:16:19] in our music battles.

[00:16:21] In fact,

[00:16:21] they've appeared quite often.

[00:16:23] This one,

[00:16:24] though,

[00:16:24] doesn't have that same

[00:16:25] production value

[00:16:26] that their other ones do.

[00:16:27] It feels like this was recorded

[00:16:29] on a phone

[00:16:29] in their car or something.

[00:16:31] You're right about that

[00:16:32] and I'm trying to get

[00:16:32] the page to load up

[00:16:33] because I want to,

[00:16:34] yeah,

[00:16:34] this came out in 2014.

[00:16:37] So yes,

[00:16:37] it is.

[00:16:38] Oh,

[00:16:38] okay.

[00:16:39] And apparently,

[00:16:40] this song is not

[00:16:41] an original to them.

[00:16:42] It was originally performed

[00:16:42] by Little Eva

[00:16:43] back in 1963.

[00:16:46] Okay,

[00:16:47] maybe they were doing it

[00:16:47] intentionally to sound old.

[00:16:49] Yeah.

[00:16:49] Maybe,

[00:16:50] maybe.

[00:16:50] Let's give them that.

[00:16:51] Definitely.

[00:16:52] We'll extend that to them

[00:16:53] for sure.

[00:16:54] So there you go,

[00:16:55] a food fight,

[00:16:56] a little bit of a battle

[00:16:58] in regards to these songs

[00:17:00] about food.

[00:17:01] Let us know which one

[00:17:01] you like more.

[00:17:02] You can vote right now.

[00:17:02] Link is in the description.

[00:17:04] Tomorrow,

[00:17:05] Scotty.

[00:17:06] This is the day

[00:17:07] the real stragglers

[00:17:08] really come in.

[00:17:10] The,

[00:17:10] the,

[00:17:10] the Dan's of the world

[00:17:11] begin to be like,

[00:17:12] okay.

[00:17:13] Dan shows up

[00:17:14] in a Christmas sweater

[00:17:15] tomorrow.

[00:17:15] Yes.

[00:17:15] He's a,

[00:17:16] he's in full,

[00:17:17] full Christmas attire.

[00:17:18] I'm very excited though.

[00:17:20] It is a,

[00:17:20] everybody is in the

[00:17:21] Christmas spirit now.

[00:17:23] I love when that happens.

[00:17:24] So join us tomorrow.

[00:17:25] Last episode of the week.

[00:17:27] And then when we come back,

[00:17:28] it is crazy.

[00:17:29] It's December.

[00:17:30] December's here.

[00:17:31] It's crazy.

[00:17:32] I can't believe it.

[00:17:32] Let's just enjoy

[00:17:33] what we have.

[00:17:34] Everybody.

[00:17:35] Yeah.

[00:17:35] And happy,

[00:17:35] happy Thanksgiving,

[00:17:36] everybody.

[00:17:37] I hope you have a wonderful

[00:17:38] time with your loved ones

[00:17:39] and your friends and family.

[00:17:40] And if you're not in the U S

[00:17:42] happy Thursday.

[00:17:43] That's right.

[00:17:43] It's just a regular Thursday

[00:17:45] for you.

[00:17:46] That's right.

[00:17:46] We'll be back tomorrow

[00:17:47] with another episode until then.

[00:17:49] Merry Christmas.

[00:17:50] And happy Thanksgiving.

[00:18:00] You're about to hear some ads

[00:18:01] that help pay for our trip

[00:18:02] back and forth to the North pole.

[00:18:04] Feel free to listen,

[00:18:05] feel free to bail now,

[00:18:06] but either way,

[00:18:07] thanks for being here.

[00:18:09] Ho,

[00:18:09] ho,

[00:18:10] ho.

[00:18:10] Ho,

[00:18:10] ho,
