[00:00.000 --> 00:29.000] Live from the North Pole, it's time for Christmas morning. The Daily Show where every day is Christmas. Here are your hosts, Bram and Sky. [00:30.000 --> 00:59.000] Well, hello, everybody. In Merry Christmas, I'm a good friend, Bram. I'm here with my good friend Scott Scott. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas, Bram and how's it going? Good. It is February, officially a new month, officially closer to Christmas this week than we were last week. So I'm doing good, all things consider. How about you? What is winter going? What's winter right now for you? Is there snow on the ground? Is it warm? [01:00.000 --> 01:29.000] Oh, back in Denver? Yeah, it's cold. It's cold and it's snowy. Just the way I like it. I do have a February update for you. Okay. The music choice station on Xfinity as of February 1st took Christmas music away. That's fair. So that's the longest I've ever seen it go. Yeah, they normally switch to like a love music earlier than that, right? Exactly. That's exactly right. So February 1st, it became love you, airy or whatever stupid holiday. [01:29.000 --> 01:58.000] They've decided to call it and it was time, of course, but I was curious every day. Like, I just wanted to see is it still on? And yeah, it was. So that was kind of fun. Fun and sad. Fun and sad. Yeah, exactly. Once they took it away, it was a little sad, but I got other outlets for Christmas music. It's okay. I've heard that there are other ways to get your Christmas music. It's great. There are a couple other places. Is there any place that we could go to maybe get some mail? Do you know of anywhere? [01:58.660 --> 02:01.560] There's a random sack on the floor. Let me open it up and see what's in it. [02:08.840 --> 02:15.520] Well, it turns out it was the mail bag. That's good. I have an email from David Hatfield, who is our resident Santa. [02:15.620 --> 02:21.880] Remember he did the whole Santa thing? Yeah. Brandon Scott, I do enjoy the days and weeks countdown every episode, [02:22.000 --> 02:25.440] even when it's a big number, because it can only go down from here. [02:25.520 --> 02:30.640] It was a fun discussion on the party episode, and Jack's pointed out that it's really not that long, [02:30.740 --> 02:35.820] because we can just countdown to October 1st. That's right. Did it? Did it? Did it? [02:35.920 --> 02:40.960] He says, and I look forward to the sound effect. However, I can do y'all one better. [02:41.060 --> 02:46.440] I think we can really countdown to August 1st. See, David is speaking my language here. [02:46.540 --> 02:52.000] Now, hear me out on this. October 1st, which is firmly, quote, spooky season time, [02:52.000 --> 02:57.200] heralds the start of the holiday season, because it's the first leg of Happy Hollow Thanksmas. [02:57.300 --> 03:01.900] And by this time, Christmas merchandise has already started popping up at different places. [03:02.000 --> 03:08.400] We can extrapolate this back even further. To me, spooky season starts around August 1st, and here's why. [03:08.500 --> 03:14.600] Spirit Halloween, the famous seasonal Halloween store kicks off its season with the opening of its flagship store in New Jersey. [03:14.700 --> 03:20.600] Last year, it opened on July 29th. In 2024, it's going to open on July 30th. [03:20.600 --> 03:25.000] Usually, the latest it will open is, you guessed it, August 1st. [03:25.100 --> 03:28.600] So, by August 1st, big famous Halloween stores will be opening. [03:28.700 --> 03:32.700] Where I teach on August 1st, we are less than two weeks from starting the school year. [03:32.800 --> 03:37.000] School years starting means fall. Fall means the holiday season. [03:37.100 --> 03:41.300] Once we get to August 1st, back to school supplies and displays are on borrowed time. [03:41.400 --> 03:45.400] Before you know it, Halloween will pop up again in all the regular stores. [03:45.500 --> 03:49.900] So, we can countdown to August 1st, which according to the date that I'm writing this email [03:49.900 --> 03:52.800] is only 188 days, Merry Christmas. [03:52.900 --> 03:55.900] Well done, David. Well done, David. I like that. [03:56.000 --> 04:02.400] I got to be honest, by the end of it, when you said we're only 188 days until August 1st, I got pretty excited. [04:02.500 --> 04:05.400] Yeah, I was like, hey, that doesn't sound too bad there. [04:05.500 --> 04:07.400] Excellent work, David. [04:07.500 --> 04:11.600] That's the hard-hitting journalism that no one asked for, but we all need, you know? [04:11.700 --> 04:13.700] That's right. It's inscrutable. [04:13.800 --> 04:14.300] That's right. [04:14.400 --> 04:18.800] One more email from Parker Hallet just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your podcast. [04:18.800 --> 04:24.000] I have three Christmas podcasts that I have come to love, but they all take a break after Christmas. [04:24.100 --> 04:28.200] Y'all have been added to that list, so I guess there's four now, and have become the fourth. [04:28.300 --> 04:32.000] Oh, yeah, there it is right there, and have an automatic download notification. [04:32.100 --> 04:36.700] Thank you for providing that Christmas fill that I know will come on a consistent basis. [04:36.800 --> 04:39.400] Keep up the good work as it is much appreciated. [04:39.500 --> 04:46.400] P.S. For someone doing a Christmas podcast all year, I'm a bit disappointed that your ornaments can fit on one table. [04:46.400 --> 04:50.000] This is coming from someone who couldn't fit their ornaments on ten tables. [04:50.100 --> 04:51.200] Oh, my gosh. [04:51.300 --> 04:55.500] Parker, it's a valid point without boring everybody with a photo. [04:55.600 --> 04:58.500] These are stacked containers. [04:58.600 --> 05:03.600] They're like five levels deep, each one holds about 25, and the entire table is covered. [05:03.700 --> 05:07.900] So I could probably spread it out to ten tables, maybe not, maybe a little less. [05:08.000 --> 05:11.600] Parker out here with the ornament shade towards Scott. [05:11.700 --> 05:12.300] That's okay. [05:12.400 --> 05:12.800] That's all right. [05:12.900 --> 05:16.000] I like it when people keep me on my toes, and Parker has done that. [05:16.000 --> 05:25.200] So speaking of you keeping you on your tails, I have a late edition email for you, [05:25.300 --> 05:27.100] and I'm just kind of intrigued by the answer. [05:27.200 --> 05:27.900] You don't know about this. [05:28.000 --> 05:30.600] But I got an email from Don Strickland that says, [05:30.700 --> 05:35.700] Hi, for work, I'm doing a training module for city program. [05:35.800 --> 05:38.800] And the narrator really sounds like Scott. [05:38.900 --> 05:39.900] Is it you? [05:41.200 --> 05:42.800] Spreadsheets and budgets and such. [05:42.900 --> 05:43.900] No, it's not. [05:44.100 --> 05:45.400] I wish it was. [05:45.500 --> 05:46.600] If there's an opening, let me know. [05:46.700 --> 05:48.300] I'm always happy to do more voice work. [05:48.400 --> 05:49.700] You do some voice work. [05:49.800 --> 05:51.300] And so I thought it was a valid question. [05:51.400 --> 05:53.100] I didn't know if you had done anything for city. [05:53.200 --> 05:56.800] I feel like you would have told me if you'd gotten a big contract like that. [05:56.900 --> 05:57.600] But there you go. [05:57.700 --> 05:59.900] There's somebody out there impersonating you, Scott. [06:00.000 --> 06:03.600] The other day, I was listening to some news podcast or something, [06:03.700 --> 06:05.000] and my fingers were dirty. [06:05.100 --> 06:07.000] So I couldn't skip ahead on the ads. [06:07.100 --> 06:10.900] And I heard one and I thought, gosh, that voice sounds familiar. [06:11.000 --> 06:13.800] And then just something made me think, oh, I wonder if it's one of my [06:13.900 --> 06:17.300] teachers who taught a narration class that I took. [06:17.400 --> 06:18.700] And it turns out it was. [06:18.800 --> 06:23.200] And I just think it's odd that you could hear a voice with no face whatsoever. [06:23.300 --> 06:24.800] And you're like, hey, I know that voice. [06:24.900 --> 06:27.000] So I guess I'm getting a discerning ear. [06:27.100 --> 06:28.200] Well, I'll just say this. [06:28.300 --> 06:29.000] I'll just say this. [06:29.100 --> 06:32.100] You have a great voice and you got a good voice for radio. [06:32.200 --> 06:36.100] And so the fact that you're being confused with other great voices, [06:36.200 --> 06:39.100] no one's hearing my voice and going like, man, could that be any? [06:39.200 --> 06:41.200] No, no one's no one's up here. [06:41.300 --> 06:42.800] No one's doing this. [06:42.800 --> 06:46.200] No one's as bad at voices as I am. [06:46.300 --> 06:50.800] And so there's no one's hearing my voice and going, man, that could be anybody. [06:50.900 --> 06:53.000] No, it's clearly my voice. [06:53.100 --> 06:56.800] So the fact that you're getting confused with professional Scott, that's not bad. [06:56.900 --> 06:57.300] That's kind. [06:57.400 --> 06:57.800] I like that. [06:57.900 --> 06:58.400] I appreciate that. [06:58.500 --> 06:59.000] Absolutely. [06:59.100 --> 07:00.600] How are we doing in the review department? [07:00.700 --> 07:04.000] We are right where we were last week at 2.38. [07:04.100 --> 07:09.600] And if you remember, I told you that there were a couple that I missed during the business of the holiday season. [07:09.600 --> 07:14.000] So this one also comes from the end of November, but I do think it's a good one. [07:14.100 --> 07:17.100] And obviously all of them are worth reading, but this one's especially kind. [07:17.200 --> 07:26.000] And so this is from Guga Pupa says, it takes a lot to get me to comment. [07:26.100 --> 07:34.100] Scott and Bran, I was standing on the train platform this morning in the dark freezing weather waiting for my train. [07:34.100 --> 07:43.300] Unlike my fellow commuters, I was smiling and completely unaware of the miserable conditions because I had Christmas morning. [07:43.400 --> 07:47.900] Your enthusiasm and overflowing positivity is so infectious. [07:48.000 --> 07:52.900] I can't help but start my day in a good mood and ready to pass it on. [07:53.000 --> 08:02.600] As another Christmas podcaster who also enjoys the holiday all year, but is a lazy fan, it takes a lot to get me to post a review. [08:02.600 --> 08:06.000] You moved me to do so and absolutely deserve it. [08:06.100 --> 08:12.000] Merry Christmas, Bob Baker, Festive Foreign's Film Fans. [08:12.100 --> 08:14.800] I believe is the name of Bob's program. [08:14.900 --> 08:15.800] So there you go. [08:15.900 --> 08:16.400] It is. [08:16.500 --> 08:18.400] I've talked to Bob a few times. [08:18.500 --> 08:22.000] Bob has a great podcast, the Festive Foreign Film Fans at 4. [08:22.100 --> 08:29.500] Yeah, and he and his buddy review, well, obviously, foreign films, but they have a Christmas slant on them. [08:29.500 --> 08:31.200] And it's fun to listen to. [08:31.300 --> 08:37.900] And also Bob does this great series of bits on Jack Ford's Total Christmas Podcast. [08:38.000 --> 08:42.400] And I really enjoy what Bob brings and thank you for the review, Bob. [08:42.500 --> 08:42.900] Thank you, Bob. [08:43.000 --> 08:43.400] It's very nice of you. [08:43.500 --> 08:43.900] Thank you, Bob. [08:44.000 --> 08:44.400] Googapoopa. [08:44.500 --> 08:45.400] Googapoopa. [08:45.500 --> 08:46.700] Let's googapoopa for you. [08:46.800 --> 08:49.600] Scott, do you get a joke for us today? [08:49.700 --> 08:50.400] I do. [08:50.500 --> 08:54.800] And instead of googling bad Christmas jokes, I googled excellent Christmas jokes. [08:54.900 --> 08:56.600] Oh, wow. [08:56.700 --> 08:57.800] What a change of pace here. [08:57.800 --> 09:02.200] Strangely, though, the first like 25 links that showed up had already been visited. [09:02.300 --> 09:03.900] So I thought you found your book. [09:04.000 --> 09:05.200] What are you googling for? [09:05.300 --> 09:08.000] Well, sometimes I don't feel like reaching over. [09:08.600 --> 09:10.500] You know, the keyboard was already on my lap. [09:10.600 --> 09:15.200] So I was like, well, this motion with my fingers is easier than this motion with my arm. [09:15.300 --> 09:16.000] Yeah, I get that. [09:16.100 --> 09:16.300] Yeah. [09:16.400 --> 09:19.700] How did the ornament know that she was addicted to Christmas? [09:19.800 --> 09:23.300] How did the ornament know that it was addicted to Christmas? [09:23.700 --> 09:28.200] Um, wanted Christmas to keep hanging around? [09:28.300 --> 09:29.500] It's pretty close. [09:29.600 --> 09:31.700] She'd been hooked on Christmas trees all her life. [09:31.800 --> 09:34.700] Oh, there you go. [09:34.800 --> 09:35.700] That's not bad. [09:35.800 --> 09:36.700] Not terrible. [09:37.200 --> 09:38.100] Let's see the countdown. [09:38.200 --> 09:38.500] All right. [09:44.200 --> 09:48.700] 322 days until Christmas. [09:48.800 --> 09:50.300] Oh, my voice did a fun thing there. [09:50.400 --> 09:51.000] It's so excited. [09:51.000 --> 09:52.900] 322, Scotty. [09:53.000 --> 09:56.400] That's the kind of voice that gets you on city planning podcasts. [09:56.500 --> 09:57.800] That's exactly right. [09:57.900 --> 09:59.000] People are asking me all the time. [09:59.100 --> 10:01.100] Will you talk about banking, please? [10:01.200 --> 10:06.100] 322 days, 46 weeks for those of us who like the smaller number. [10:06.200 --> 10:10.000] And it's only 237 days until October 1st. [10:10.100 --> 10:12.300] Wow, 46. [10:12.400 --> 10:18.000] And in the spirit of David Hatfield, it's only 177 days until August 1st. [10:18.100 --> 10:19.000] Woo! [10:21.000 --> 10:22.000] Need some sort of... [10:22.100 --> 10:25.100] I don't have anything for that, so we'll work on that. [10:25.200 --> 10:26.900] We'll workshop it, okay? [10:27.000 --> 10:27.400] Something. [10:27.500 --> 10:28.500] He said it was 100... [10:28.600 --> 10:29.500] Oh, I see, because he's... [10:29.600 --> 10:30.500] He wrote the email. [10:30.600 --> 10:32.100] Yeah, yeah, I get that, okay. [10:32.200 --> 10:33.900] I got some news if you want it, bud. [10:34.000 --> 10:35.100] Yeah, I sure do. [10:40.700 --> 10:43.200] Today is February 7th. [10:43.300 --> 10:45.700] Here's the news. [10:45.800 --> 10:47.800] I found this news story. [10:47.900 --> 10:49.000] I thought it was so fun. [10:49.000 --> 10:50.900] And so I immediately said I'm going to use this news story. [10:51.000 --> 10:53.900] I'm now realizing maybe I should have waited until next Wednesday [10:54.000 --> 10:57.000] because it's Valentine's Day, but it's too late. [10:57.100 --> 11:00.400] It's a Valentine's Christmas story crossover. [11:00.500 --> 11:01.400] I think... [11:01.500 --> 11:02.500] Why don't you hold on to it? [11:02.600 --> 11:04.100] Well, then what am I supposed to do here? [11:04.200 --> 11:07.500] Because I have a news item, and it's a sad one, but I do want to mention it. [11:07.600 --> 11:08.400] All right, okay. [11:08.500 --> 11:12.500] We found out this week that the director of the movie, Jingle Bell Rocks, [11:12.600 --> 11:14.300] Mitchell Kaizen, he passed away. [11:14.400 --> 11:14.900] Mm. [11:15.000 --> 11:18.700] And it was unexpected, and it was very sad. [11:18.700 --> 11:22.600] Now, I wasn't friends with Mitchell, but I've probably exchanged, [11:22.700 --> 11:25.800] I don't know, maybe a dozen emails over the years with him, [11:25.900 --> 11:29.200] and I really enjoyed his film, Jingle Bell Rocks. [11:29.300 --> 11:31.400] You enjoyed it, too, once you finally saw it. [11:31.500 --> 11:34.900] It was one of those movies where you watch it [11:35.000 --> 11:39.100] and you learn about this subset of people that you relate with [11:39.200 --> 11:41.600] and you didn't know it really existed. [11:41.700 --> 11:42.600] And it was a very... [11:42.700 --> 11:44.600] I don't want to say it was an eye-opening film, [11:44.700 --> 11:48.000] but it just gave me this great feeling when I watched it. [11:48.000 --> 11:52.000] Like, oh, there are other people that are really into Christmas music the way I am. [11:52.100 --> 11:56.300] And I exchanged an email with Mitchell, like, not even three weeks ago. [11:56.400 --> 11:56.800] Mm. [11:56.900 --> 11:59.600] He did this thing every year called Mitchell's Merry Mix. [11:59.700 --> 12:03.500] And that was mentioned in the movie where it started off as a mix tape [12:03.600 --> 12:05.900] and he would send it out to his friends. [12:06.000 --> 12:09.000] And he would find this weird, obscure Christmas music. [12:09.100 --> 12:10.900] It was one of the reasons I did Jingle Jank. [12:11.000 --> 12:15.700] You were also involved in helping me start that as well. [12:15.700 --> 12:19.200] And I was trying to find some earlier ones. [12:19.300 --> 12:21.200] And I was wondering why he hadn't replied. [12:21.300 --> 12:24.600] So I guess something must have been going on in his life. [12:24.700 --> 12:26.200] And he passed. [12:26.300 --> 12:27.200] And it's very sad. [12:27.300 --> 12:33.200] And it was a little heartwarming to see all the messages and replies of shock and sadness. [12:33.300 --> 12:35.400] You know, for what that's worth. [12:35.500 --> 12:37.400] You know, like, nobody wants to see somebody pass, [12:37.500 --> 12:39.600] but it's nice to know that you were cared about. [12:39.700 --> 12:45.100] So, RIP Mitchell, I really enjoyed your work and we're going to miss you. [12:45.100 --> 12:45.800] Absolutely. [12:45.900 --> 12:50.000] If you haven't seen the film, I would highly recommend checking it out, [12:50.100 --> 12:53.900] especially this week and kind of remembering him in that way. [12:54.000 --> 12:55.600] It's a really cool documentary. [12:55.700 --> 13:01.400] And if you are somebody like us that, you know, it's almost kind of like one of the reasons [13:01.500 --> 13:03.100] why we do original music week. [13:03.200 --> 13:03.900] Yeah, absolutely. [13:04.000 --> 13:08.400] It's to find those weird, obscure Christmas songs that are out there. [13:08.500 --> 13:10.800] And so, thank you for bringing that up. [13:10.900 --> 13:14.000] And yes, I will share next week's news next week, which makes sense. [13:14.000 --> 13:19.100] And if anybody has any of Mitchell's Mary mixes from before 2022, [13:19.200 --> 13:22.300] hit me up, Christmas Morning podcast at gmail.com. [13:22.400 --> 13:24.500] I don't want to see them disappear. [13:24.600 --> 13:27.300] I want to archive them and I'd love to hear them, [13:27.400 --> 13:29.600] especially right now while he's in our memory. [13:29.700 --> 13:30.600] So, that's our news. [13:30.700 --> 13:31.200] A little sad. [13:31.300 --> 13:32.100] They can't all be happy. [13:32.200 --> 13:32.800] They can't all be happy. [13:32.900 --> 13:33.700] Let's take a quick break. [13:33.800 --> 13:39.900] We will come back with the TV updates and the Christmas music battle here on Christmas morning. [13:44.900 --> 13:46.600] Welcome back, everybody. [13:46.700 --> 13:53.500] TV Scotty's in the house to let us know, you know, how much or how little Christmas [13:53.600 --> 13:58.000] there is in this first week of February. [13:58.100 --> 13:59.500] Scotty, what do you got for us? [13:59.600 --> 14:04.600] I shouldn't be surprised that there is so little, but I think I'm still comparing it [14:04.700 --> 14:08.800] to what was happening in November and December where I had to pair it down [14:08.900 --> 14:12.100] because, you know, it would take eight or nine minutes to read all of it. [14:12.200 --> 14:13.800] Well, I only have a couple of days. [14:13.800 --> 14:19.000] So, here are the Christmas TV specials for the next three days, courtesy of mostly Christmas.com. [15:26.300 --> 15:29.200] It is time for the Christmas music battle. [15:29.300 --> 15:31.200] Let's get to last week first. [15:31.300 --> 15:38.200] The song was Angels We Have Heard on High, a closer battle than the previous week, [15:38.200 --> 15:41.100] but not all that close. [15:41.200 --> 15:45.100] Again, it seems like people have the things that they're into up first. [15:45.200 --> 15:51.100] In last place with 23% of the vote, it is the Aqualads. [15:51.200 --> 15:54.100] Who brought this, Scotty? [15:54.200 --> 15:56.100] It was not me. [15:56.200 --> 15:57.100] Wow. [15:57.200 --> 15:58.100] It was John Rice. [15:58.200 --> 16:00.100] And you're in the surprise of this injury. [16:00.200 --> 16:01.100] Yeah, it is the surprise of the century. [16:01.200 --> 16:03.100] You would have brought it though, the lizard. [16:03.200 --> 16:05.100] Yeah, I absolutely would have brought it. [16:05.100 --> 16:10.000] In fact, you texted me this link before I even saw from John Rice and said, [16:10.100 --> 16:12.000] oh man, this is right up your alley. [16:12.100 --> 16:14.000] And it absolutely was. [16:14.100 --> 16:18.000] It was a great surf rock version of that song. [16:18.100 --> 16:19.000] Really, really great. [16:19.100 --> 16:22.000] Yeah, it probably would have crushed on an instrumental week. [16:22.100 --> 16:23.000] Yes. [16:23.100 --> 16:28.000] With 32.6% of the vote is the version by Frank Zedd. [16:28.000 --> 16:34.900] Definitely had a Blink-182 thing to it. [16:35.000 --> 16:35.900] And that's why I chose it. [16:36.000 --> 16:36.900] I liked it. [16:37.000 --> 16:41.900] Which means for the, was this the second week or third week in a row? [16:42.000 --> 16:42.900] Probably second or third. [16:43.000 --> 16:43.900] I don't know. [16:44.000 --> 16:44.900] You're really crushing it so far. [16:45.000 --> 16:47.900] I'm in a little bit of a streak here, which I'm not used to. [16:48.000 --> 16:51.900] It's the version I brought by Josh Rouse, which I really like this version. [16:51.900 --> 16:59.800] And I, whenever, it's got, you and I share this, when we're looking for a cover, [16:59.900 --> 17:01.800] we want to hear something a little bit different. [17:01.900 --> 17:07.300] And I appreciate that not only was the music kind of something I hadn't heard before [17:07.400 --> 17:10.800] when it comes in, when we got to her on high, he also changed the melody a little bit, [17:10.900 --> 17:14.800] which I thought was really cool and lended itself really well to the style of that song, [17:14.900 --> 17:16.800] the way that he was doing. [17:16.900 --> 17:20.800] I'm not great with time signatures, but that didn't seem like the standard one. [17:20.800 --> 17:25.300] It had a different beat and feel to it and a tempo, and I enjoyed it. [17:25.400 --> 17:30.800] And peeling the curtain back, when we were playing the songs last week, you even said, [17:30.900 --> 17:33.300] well, I'm going to win this one, and you did. [17:33.400 --> 17:35.800] I think I said, I think I might. [17:35.900 --> 17:37.800] No, you said you were going to win it, and you were right. [17:37.900 --> 17:38.800] Was I that definitive? [17:38.900 --> 17:41.300] It was, I think it was, it was pretty obvious. [17:41.400 --> 17:48.300] Like, we have these weird songs and these offbeat songs, the surf guitar and this weird Frank Zedd thing, [17:48.300 --> 17:52.800] and they appeal to some people, they're not going to appeal to the, the most people. [17:52.900 --> 17:53.800] And that's okay. [17:53.900 --> 17:54.800] The masses. [17:54.900 --> 17:58.800] You and I have both won seasons before, it kind of doesn't really matter. [17:58.900 --> 18:03.300] So I'd really rather bring one that I feel strongly about, even if it's a long tail one, [18:03.400 --> 18:05.800] than only a couple people are really going to be into. [18:05.900 --> 18:10.300] Like, my buddy Jessica Trinidad, she almost always says, I know which one you pick, [18:10.400 --> 18:13.200] but she probably would have thought the Aqualads was me this week. [18:13.300 --> 18:16.200] Let's get to this week's song, which is Christmas Island. [18:16.200 --> 18:20.700] Before we talk about the experience of finding a version on Bandcamp, [18:20.800 --> 18:23.200] do you have a fun fact for us, Scotty? [18:23.300 --> 18:28.200] You asked that I bring some kind of history for this one, because you and I both said, [18:28.300 --> 18:29.200] we don't know anything about this song. [18:29.300 --> 18:33.200] Well, because you said you thought that it was originally by the Andrew sisters, I believe, [18:33.300 --> 18:34.200] is what you thought, yes? [18:34.300 --> 18:40.700] So Christmas Island was written by Lyle Moraine and was recorded in 1946 by the Andrew sisters [18:40.800 --> 18:44.200] and backed by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians. [18:44.200 --> 18:47.200] So the first version was the Andrew sisters. [18:47.300 --> 18:48.200] There you go. [18:48.300 --> 18:50.700] What's Lyle's deal? [18:50.800 --> 18:56.200] Like, has he written a lot of other songs, or was this kind of a one-off? [18:56.300 --> 19:01.700] Nope. I found it on discogs that he, this was the only song he ever wrote. [19:01.800 --> 19:04.200] This is what he was most known for in his life. [19:04.300 --> 19:04.700] Wow. [19:04.800 --> 19:08.700] He served with some kind of honor in World War II. [19:08.800 --> 19:13.200] So I'm wondering, did he, and this is just pure speculation, [19:13.200 --> 19:16.700] because we obviously can't ask Lyle. He passed in 1988. [19:16.800 --> 19:18.700] Did he have the idea for this song? [19:18.800 --> 19:21.200] Well, he was serving in the Pacific or something. [19:21.300 --> 19:22.200] That would be really interesting. [19:22.300 --> 19:23.200] That would be interesting. [19:23.300 --> 19:25.700] I'm making a apocryphal history about the song. [19:25.800 --> 19:29.200] Which came first? This song on Malakalikimaka? [19:29.300 --> 19:33.200] I thought Malakalikimaka was 1953, but I might be wrong on that one. [19:33.300 --> 19:36.700] Because I was looking for songs last night, and my wife said, [19:36.800 --> 19:38.700] oh, you're looking for Malakalikimaka. [19:38.800 --> 19:39.700] And I said, no. [19:39.800 --> 19:41.200] Christmas Island. [19:41.200 --> 19:45.700] So kind of very similar in the style, obviously, and also, [19:45.800 --> 19:47.700] thematically similar. [19:47.800 --> 19:51.700] Oh, Malakalikimaka was written in 1949. [19:51.800 --> 19:52.800] So this one came first. [19:52.900 --> 19:53.900] Wow. Interesting. [19:54.000 --> 19:56.100] Pretty close, too, within three years. [19:56.200 --> 19:58.900] But also popular from the Andrews Sisters. [19:59.000 --> 20:01.100] They really had the whole Pacific Islander. [20:01.200 --> 20:05.700] No one, no one, screams Pacific Islander like the Andrews Sisters. [20:05.800 --> 20:10.000] Let's find out what we found. I got to be honest. [20:10.000 --> 20:14.000] Oh, tricky, tricky, tricky bandcamp. [20:14.100 --> 20:17.500] Because you type in Christmas Island and there's like 29 pages. [20:17.600 --> 20:20.500] And you find out that there's a band called Christmas Island [20:20.600 --> 20:23.700] who is not my jam. [20:23.800 --> 20:27.200] And that is a lot of the pages is them. [20:27.300 --> 20:30.700] And then another group that had an album called Christmas Island, [20:30.800 --> 20:32.700] but is not a Christmas album at all. [20:32.800 --> 20:35.200] And then there were a whole bunch of songs just called Christmas Island [20:35.300 --> 20:37.500] that had nothing to do with this song. [20:37.500 --> 20:40.400] I found a lot of like, there was a couple rock songs [20:40.500 --> 20:43.400] that were called Christmas Island that just were not good. [20:43.500 --> 20:47.000] Unfortunately, they weren't good either because I was going to pick up for original week. [20:47.100 --> 20:49.000] I know. You had to see it. [20:49.100 --> 20:51.400] But, you know, you get to like the, I got to the third page of results. [20:51.500 --> 20:55.400] And usually, if the results start falling off by there, [20:55.500 --> 20:57.000] they're not going to get better. [20:57.100 --> 21:00.000] But you forward a couple pages and all of a sudden, [21:00.100 --> 21:01.500] there's another legit version. [21:01.600 --> 21:04.400] And it was, it was hard, man. It was not a good week. [21:04.400 --> 21:08.300] Let's find out what we have here. [21:08.400 --> 21:13.900] First, we have Christmas Island by Kayla Ramu and Hannah Barstow. [21:14.000 --> 21:23.900] How'd you like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island? [21:26.000 --> 21:33.900] How'd you like to spend the holiday away across the sea? [21:35.400 --> 21:47.400] How'd you like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island? [21:47.500 --> 21:56.400] How'd you like to hang your stocking on a great big coke and a tree? [21:56.500 --> 22:01.900] How'd you like to stay out there? [22:01.900 --> 22:06.800] Like the oil unders dew. [22:06.900 --> 22:16.900] Wait for Santa to sail in with your presents in a canoe. [22:17.000 --> 22:19.900] Okay, that was a slow and traditional version of that one, Brandon. [22:20.000 --> 22:24.400] A slow version? I like the vocals. It's nice. [22:24.500 --> 22:27.400] But, yeah. The vocals were very pretty. [22:27.500 --> 22:31.400] I wish it was a little faster, but that's going to be the traditional offering for today. [22:31.400 --> 22:34.900] Let's see if we have anything different stylistically. [22:35.000 --> 22:38.900] Here's a version by Ben Gordon Show. [23:01.400 --> 23:11.900] How'd you like to hang your stocking on a great big coke and a tree? [23:12.000 --> 23:15.900] How'd you like to stay out there? [23:16.000 --> 23:20.400] Like the oil unders dew. [23:20.500 --> 23:28.400] Wait for Santa to sail in with your presents in a canoe. [23:28.400 --> 23:41.400] If you ever spend Christmas on Christmas Island, you will never sleep or every day of Christmas. [23:41.500 --> 23:45.900] Dreams won't dream if dreams come true. [23:46.000 --> 23:49.400] Another one, Brandon, like you were talking about for last weeks, [23:49.500 --> 23:53.900] that did something really unique with the song, and it stood out because of it. [23:53.900 --> 23:59.400] Yes. Listen, the key is always to change it up enough to remake your own, [23:59.500 --> 24:02.800] but where it's still kind of in the same spirit. [24:02.900 --> 24:06.200] And I felt like that was holding it. I liked it. [24:06.300 --> 24:10.600] There were plenty on band camp that were not in the spirit, even though they were the same lyrics. [24:10.700 --> 24:13.400] And some of them sound like they were recorded on a potato. [24:13.500 --> 24:14.900] I don't understand. [24:15.000 --> 24:18.200] Last but not least, we have a veteran of the show at this point, [24:18.300 --> 24:20.700] Joel Peterson's version of Christmas Island. [24:20.700 --> 24:25.200] Christmas Island is the first time I've ever been to the show. [24:25.300 --> 24:27.200] I've never been to the show. [24:27.300 --> 24:29.200] I've never been to the show. [24:29.300 --> 24:31.200] I've never been to the show. [24:31.300 --> 24:32.200] I've never been to the show. [24:32.300 --> 24:33.200] I've never been to the show. [24:33.300 --> 24:34.200] I've never been to the show. [24:34.300 --> 24:35.200] I've never been to the show. [24:35.300 --> 24:36.200] I've never been to the show. [24:36.300 --> 24:37.200] I've never been to the show. [24:37.300 --> 24:38.200] I've never been to the show. [24:38.300 --> 24:39.200] I've never been to the show. [24:39.300 --> 24:40.200] I've never been to the show. [24:40.300 --> 24:41.200] I've never been to the show. [24:41.300 --> 24:42.200] I've never been to the show. [24:42.300 --> 24:43.200] I've never been to the show. [24:43.300 --> 24:44.200] I've never been to the show. [24:44.300 --> 24:45.200] I've never been to the show. [24:45.300 --> 24:46.200] I've never been to the show. [24:46.300 --> 24:47.200] I've never been to the show. [24:47.200 --> 24:48.900] I've never been to the show. [24:49.000 --> 24:50.100] I've never been to the show. [24:50.200 --> 24:51.100] I've never been to the show. [24:51.200 --> 24:52.100] I've never been to the show. [24:52.200 --> 24:53.100] I've never been to the show. [24:53.200 --> 24:54.100] I've never been to the show. [24:54.200 --> 24:55.100] I've never been to the show. [24:55.200 --> 24:56.100] I've never been to the show. [24:56.200 --> 24:57.100] I've never been to the show. [24:57.200 --> 24:58.100] I've never been to the show. [24:58.200 --> 24:59.100] I've never been to the show. [24:59.200 --> 25:00.100] I've never been to the show. [25:00.200 --> 25:01.100] I've never been to the show. [25:01.200 --> 25:02.100] I've never been to the show. [25:02.200 --> 25:03.100] I've never been to the show. [25:03.200 --> 25:04.100] I've never been to the show. [25:04.200 --> 25:05.100] I've never been to the show. [25:05.200 --> 25:06.100] I've never been to the show. [25:06.200 --> 25:07.100] I've never been to the show. [25:07.200 --> 25:08.100] I've never been to the show. [25:08.200 --> 25:09.100] I've never been to the show. [25:09.200 --> 25:10.100] I've never been to the show. [25:10.100 --> 25:24.500] I've never been to the show. [25:24.600 --> 25:25.500] Good. [25:25.600 --> 25:26.100] It is a bold choice, [25:26.200 --> 25:27.200] but I do like it. [25:27.300 --> 25:28.700] Three different versions, [25:28.800 --> 25:40.100] three [25:40.100 --> 25:40.940] which is really nice. [25:40.940 --> 25:41.780] So. [25:41.780 --> 25:42.860] There's a taste for everybody this week. [25:42.860 --> 25:44.740] This should be a close battle, I think. [25:44.740 --> 25:46.620] I think this is gonna be the closest in a while. [25:46.620 --> 25:47.460] But we'll find out. [25:47.460 --> 25:49.780] You can vote right now, link is in the description. [25:49.780 --> 25:52.700] Next week is, I'm sorry, [25:52.700 --> 25:56.020] is Original Christmas Music Week. [25:56.020 --> 25:58.260] And I wanna add a little caveat there [25:58.260 --> 26:02.140] because next Wednesday is Valentine's Day. [26:02.140 --> 26:03.820] So I would like to make it [26:03.820 --> 26:08.820] some sort of Christmas love theme for the original. [26:08.900 --> 26:10.820] Something that's like a little, [26:10.820 --> 26:13.860] little Valentine's angle to it. [26:13.860 --> 26:15.060] Well, wait, wait, wait. [26:15.060 --> 26:16.500] Do you wanna pull an audible [26:16.500 --> 26:19.460] and just say any Christmas lovey kind of song [26:19.460 --> 26:20.660] because it's the holiday? [26:20.660 --> 26:23.620] It's very rare that an actual holiday drops on any [26:23.620 --> 26:26.260] Christmas lovey song will work. [26:26.260 --> 26:27.660] It does not have to be original. [26:27.660 --> 26:30.500] If it is original, boy, extra bonus points for that. [26:30.500 --> 26:34.020] I can't think of a Christmas lovey song at least. [26:34.020 --> 26:36.300] I guess I have to go watch that music choice crap station. [26:36.300 --> 26:40.420] There's a Dave Barnes song that I really like. [26:40.420 --> 26:41.460] Where is it kind of? [26:41.460 --> 26:43.740] I mean, listen, you could argue that, baby. [26:43.740 --> 26:46.620] It's called outside is a Christmas love song. [26:46.620 --> 26:47.660] So there's a few of them out there. [26:47.660 --> 26:49.260] But I think this is a fun challenge. [26:49.260 --> 26:51.500] It's not just, it could be. [26:51.500 --> 26:53.660] It depends on how you hear it. [26:53.660 --> 26:56.740] And so I think that is, I think this is cool. [26:56.740 --> 26:58.220] I think this is a fun way to do this. [26:58.220 --> 26:59.060] Yes. [26:59.060 --> 27:01.780] So go to bandcamp.com, search for a Christmas song [27:01.780 --> 27:04.100] that has something to do with love. [27:04.100 --> 27:05.700] The more love, the better. [27:06.060 --> 27:09.540] We're going to ask listeners to vote on the loveiness of the song. [27:09.540 --> 27:11.540] I don't even know how to search for it. [27:11.540 --> 27:12.500] I don't either. [27:12.500 --> 27:14.820] I threw this out before giving it thought. [27:14.820 --> 27:16.300] I don't know how to search this. [27:16.300 --> 27:18.140] No, no, there's got to be something [27:18.140 --> 27:20.060] that we have very creative listeners [27:20.060 --> 27:21.820] and somebody's going to come up with something. [27:21.820 --> 27:24.300] I'm sure to blow my mind. [27:24.300 --> 27:25.900] Just make sure it's from bandcamp.com. [27:25.900 --> 27:28.580] Find it and email me the link at christmaswoningpodcast [27:28.580 --> 27:29.420] at gmail.com. [27:29.420 --> 27:30.260] There you go. [27:30.260 --> 27:33.460] We will be back next Wednesday, Valentine's Day, [27:33.460 --> 27:35.500] to celebrate Christmas, the way that got intended. [27:35.500 --> 27:37.500] Until then, Merry Christmas. Transcription results written to '/home/forge/transcribe3.sonicengage.com/releases/20240207165123' directory
